Why Should I Choose a Remanufactured Gearcase?

Why Should I Choose a Remanufactured Gearcase?

Rebuilt Mercruiser Outdrive

Table of Contents

This is the final article of my Gearcase Replacement Education Series and I have saved the best for last.  In this article, I will discuss REMANUFACTURED GEARCASES. The in & outs, pros & cons, the good & bad…you get the idea.

A rebuilt or remanufactured unit must meet two very important criteria: Image
1) it must be built by quality trained mechanics and
2) it must be built with quality parts.

The reason for this is simple, put good quality workmanship and parts inside, and you as a result, will have the best product available to keep you trouble free out on the water. There are some outfits selling reman housings without properly trained mechanics assembling them.  Great quality parts inside your gearcase is an excellent idea but if the mechanic has not been properly trained to assemble the unit correctly, you have gained nothing. Do your homework before buying the cheapest rebuilt gearcase lower unit out there. Experienced mechanics earn more money because of their talent and in turn, you may pay in slightly higher prices.

Once you find a reputable rebuilder you can rest easy as these units offer the best of both worlds. You should be getting  OEM parts, a unit assembled by trained mechanics in the US and a nice price savings over new OEM units.  This option is the preferred choice of most boaters.

In summary rebuilt gearcases:

  • Offer deep discount pricing to save you money
  • Are rebuilt by trained mechanics in the USA
  • Usually include a full 1 year warranty but this will vary
  • Built new to manufacturer specifications
  • Include all internal parts & is fully compatible and interchangeable with OEM drives
  • Core charges allow for recycling of your old unit*
  • Usually ships in 24 hours
*The core charge is an amount added to your total invoice that is refunded when your old core is returned to your rebuilder.  This charge motivates customers to send back their old core which allows shops to recycle that old unit. Upon receipt of your old unit, an inspection is performed to determine if any of your old unit is reusable. Refund amounts will vary depending on the health of the old unit.  Check with your rebuilder for more details on their specific core program.
