Boat Maintenance Tips

Getting that boat out for the first time this season?

Here is a boat maintenance checklist of some things to look at before getting out on the water.

Should you be uncertain of how to perform any of these maintenance steps, be sure to check with your boat mechanic. Outboard Motors:

  • Spark plugs must be replaced
  • Inspect plug wires
  • Verify gear lube is adequate
  • Inspect tank, fuel lines, primer bulb
  • All movable parts should be lubricated
  • Check prop for damage

Water System:

  • Flush water tank
  • Check water system and pump

Electrical System and Components:

  • Inspect navigation lights
  • Check battery water level
  • Review terminals for corrosion, clean and lubricate
  • Verify gauges operate properly
  • Inspect electronics for proper operation
  • Check bonding system
  • recharge batteries / replace batteries
  • Inspect all wiring for wear
  • Insure you have spare fuses
  • Insure you have spare bulbs

Trailer:

  • Verify your  registration is current & obtain required paperwork or stickers.
  • Check brakes
  • Verify proper tire pressure
  • Check for excessive tire wear
  • Inspect rollers and pads
  • Check for working tail lights
  • Test electrical connections
  • Inspect safety chains
  • Inspect tongue lock
  • Lubricate:
    • winch
    • wheel bearings
    • tongue jack
    • wheel
